Up date reports on protest against Mega Dam projects in Sarawak

Sarawak, Malaysia: Indigenous Peoples communities affected by the  mega dam projects have been putting up road blockades and protesting against the construction of dams within their ancestral lands.

In Belaga District, at Murum Hydroelectric dam  project site more than two hundred Penan families are putting blockades and protesting since September 20th. They protested against the impoundment of the dam by Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) as their ancestral land and properties will be submerged in the water. 

They complained that the government has not compensated them at all for the loss of land, houses, crops and forest areas. The government has been silent on their demands for compensation. 

The Penan are sadden with the action of Sarawak state government to impound the dam without informing them as directly affected community by the dam . They said SEB purported want to flood their land and properties as to force them to be relocated to the resettlement scheme. Once submerged, they will not be able to produce facts and evidents of their lands and properties for claiming of cmpensation claims.

In Baram District, the indigenous peoples affected by the propose Baram Dam project are putting up road blockades to stop access to the dam site and contruction of road that lead to the site. They have stopped all the operation in the area related to the preparatory works such as rocks testing, geological studies and survey activity.
